Did you know? Small daily habits make the biggest difference to long-term oral health.
At Parkview Dental Practice in Leicester, prevention is at the heart of care. Here are practical, evidence-based tips for every age:
– Brush twice daily for two minutes with a soft-bristled brush. Angle the brush at 45° to the gumline and use gentle, short strokes — vigorous scrubbing can wear enamel and irritate gums. Replace the brush every three months or after illness.
– Use fluoride toothpaste. For children under 3, use a smear of toothpaste containing at least 1000 ppm fluoride; from 3–6 years use a pea-sized amount of 1000 ppm+; from 7 years upwards a family-strength paste (about 1,350–1,500 ppm, commonly 1,450 ppm) helps strengthen enamel.
– Clean between teeth once a day. Interdental brushes are preferred where spaces allow — choose a size that fits with light resistance; use floss where contacts are tight. Regular interdental cleaning reduces bleeding and gum disease more effectively than brushing alone.
– Limit frequent snacking on sugary or acidic foods and drinks. It’s the frequency of acid attacks, not just total sugar, that causes decay. Aim to enjoy sweet treats with meals rather than between them. Choose sugar-free medicines and sugar-free gum (xylitol-containing gums can help stimulate saliva).
– For children newly losing baby teeth, consider fissure sealants on permanent molars soon after eruption and topical fluoride varnish (commonly 2.26% sodium fluoride) for those at higher risk, typically applied at least twice a year.
– Be aware of medication-related dry mouth, denture care (remove overnight, clean and soak daily), and signs of bruxism — customised night guards protect enamel. Routine checks include oral cancer screening and monitoring implants or gum health.
